The Best Chocolate Cake in the World Recipes

Since the quarantine started here in Portugal, we have been sharing the best of Portuguese food and culture online with you. New challenges bring new opportunities as well and, sometimes, they end up being pretty tasty ones!

On the last session of Taste of Lisboa at Home, our regular Sunday live sessions on Instagram, we had a very special guest. Carlos Braz Lopes is, no more no less, than the creator of The Best Chocolate Cake in the World, and one of our dearest vendor partners we love to take you and introduce you to. The cake itself is unique and one the absolute highlights of the Trendy Market, Food and Cultural Walk we run in Campo de Ourique neighborhood in Lisbon. Those who have been lucky enough to try Carlos’ chocolatey creations, know that his cake is indeed a piece of heaven on earth: Sweet, rich, textured, and with a deep chocolate taste. And more we do not reveal, because we don’t want to spoil your own experience next time you’ll visit us in Lisbon. It is definitely a must-taste in town!

This time around, Carlos Braz Lopes was kind enough to share two of his own simple chocolate recipes, included in his book “The Best Chocolate Cake in the World”. These recipes are ideal to bake as a family, along with your children; But, of course, will delight any chocolate lover out there, independently of how old you are.

Gather some simple ingredients, put your apron on, a big smile on your face, and make these delicious treats!

CHILLED CHOCOLATE SALAMI CAKE

Ingredients:
3 eggs

150g chocolate powder

150g sugar

150g unsalted butter

150g rich tea biscuits

Recipe:
Grind the biscuits and mix very well with all of the other ingredients. Place the chocolate mixture onto the wax paper and form it into a cylinder shape. Roll the parchment paper close around the mixture and twist the ends. Keep overnight or about 6 hours in the fridge to set. Serve simply sliced or with whipped cream.

Bonus tip:  Instead of shaping the mixture into a roll, use a round glass bowl to shape it : line the bowl with parchment paper, stuff with the mixture, and place in the fridge for the same time length. Take it out of the fridge, turn the bowl upside down to unmold it, remove the parchment paper, brush with melted chocolate, and decorate with edible color sprinkles.

THE NEXT GENERATION'S CHOCOLATE BISCUITS

Ingredients:
150g Belgian waffle crisps (or any other large biscuit)

150g chocolate (or more if there is a lot of biscuits)

A selection of cake decorations

Recipe:
Set out the biscuits, decorations and melted chocolate in different bowls. Brush the biscuits with chocolate, allow to harden on a tray and let the imagination run wild!

If you bake any of the above recipes, please share a photo on Instagram tagging @tasteoflisboa and @ombcm_lisboa, or using the hashtag #tasteoflisboa. Make us proud and we’ll gladly reshare your photo on our Insta Stories!
